I’m a cultural theorist, scholar of American Orientalism, film, performance theory and teratology, and I study the meaning-making that occurs at the conjunction of visual media and culture – among other places.
My main focus is on ‘the other’ and spans genres, spaces of performance of otherness, and academic disciplines, and I look for significance in the everyday as well as the extraordinary. I particularly examine monsters / others in a variety of spaces and places in popular culture.
I am an author of fiction, non-fiction travel essays, and scholarly journal articles. I travel as often as possible; Italy is my default destination but I’m happy in Turkey, England, Scotland, Ireland… Oregon and Washington State, and many other places around the world. I’m a co-founder of the Albuquerque Film Club (AFC – http://vaudeville.org/AFC/), I lead writing workshops in Italy and Turkey, and run fiction workshops in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When school is in, I teach classes in Film, American Studies and Peace Studies at the University of New Mexico.
